Recently, after thrashing their inter city rivals Manchester United with an unbelievable score line of 7-0 at Anfield, Liverpool FC have made a strong hold on their quest to achieve champions league football this season. But in spite of this being the talk of the town, there was a furor on social media for the lack of local fans outside Anfield in which was one of their biggest games of the season yet.
Liverpool FC have always had a huge global fanbase, with supporters from all around the world. The club is said to have a particularly strong fanbase in the United kingdom and also in other European countries such as Ireland, Norway and Sweden. But since a long time the club is getting stick from its rivals for their inability to get the local fans involved into attending home games at The Anfield.
It's not that the locals are not interested in attending the games but there may be quite a few reasons for this problem. One of the major reasons is said to be the Covid-19 pandemic which has not only caused the Liverpool fans, but supporters all around the world take a significant hit in their respective sources of income. Also, the major issue which has deprived the locals from attending the games is that whenever the global fans travel a long way to watch games they bring along their wives and the rest of the family who may not be as die hard supporters as the scousers are. As we know, that Anfield is known for its incredible atmosphere worldwide, the reason for it is basically supporters who have and will give everything to support the reds as opposed to wives and children who may find it difficult to get involved within the atmosphere.
Through the last seasons it has been evident that this local and global fans debate does not seem to affect the amount of support the team receives at Anfield. An eye clear evidence for this is when the team marched on towards an emphatic comeback against Lionel Messi's Barcelona despite being three goals down in the first leg of the champions league semi-final. The reds then went on to clinch their sixth champions league title after fourteen years. Still to this day, according to many great coaches such as Arsene Wenger , Josep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho, Anfield is considered to be one of the most difficult stadiums to visit for any team.
Since the implementation of the English Premier League in 1992, Liverpool have only managed to secure a single premier league title but have performed relatively well in European Competitions and the reason to show for it is nothing but their own Anfield stadium. The crucial thing is basically not where the supporters are from but how do they get involved into the club's policies and traditions. In Football, there always will be some controversy around your club which the rival fans will give you stick for unfortunately, for Liverpool it's not their performances but the lack of local fans turning up to the home games.
